2028 is a leap year of 366 days and it opens on a Saturday, so New Year's Day falls inside the weekend and no day off comes out of it — UAE law provides no substitute day in either direction. Ramadan begins on Friday 28 January and ends with Eid Al Fitr on Saturday 26, Sunday 27 and Monday 28 February, which recovers only one working day of the three. February then finishes with the leap day itself, Tuesday 29 February, the extra day this calendar carries and the next four do not.

Arafah Day is on Thursday 4 May with Eid Al Adha across Friday 5, Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 May, so the block covers one full working day, one short Friday and the weekend. The Hijri New Year holiday follows on Thursday 25 May and joins its Friday to the weekend without any leave being spent. May therefore carries three separate days off in a month when the afternoon reading already sits near 40°C and the school year is heading into its final examinations.

The Prophet Mohammed's Birthday holiday is on Thursday 3 August, the only weekday holiday between the end of May and December, and it lands in the hottest fortnight of the year. The school holidays run from the first days of July to the last week of August; families who travel do it inside that window, and the residential districts, the roads and the beaches empty in a way that is visible from any high floor. The humidity peaks in the second half of August, when overnight lows stop falling below 30°C on the coast.

Eid Al Etihad falls on Saturday 2 and Sunday 3 December, both inside the weekend, so the national holiday costs the calendar nothing and December runs as ordinary working weeks throughout. Commemoration Day on the Friday before it is a working day in any case. Europe puts its clocks forward on 26 March and back on 29 October; the UAE does neither, so the offset to London swings between three and four hours entirely at the other end. The leap year closes on Sunday 31 December.
