New Year's Day (Gregorian New Year) 2027

Type of holiday: statutory public holiday, a non-working day.

New Year's Day is a public holiday throughout the United Arab Emirates, and it is one of only three dates on the national calendar that a person can write down years in advance and be certain of. The other two are the two days of Eid Al Etihad at the start of December. Everything else in the UAE year is governed by the moon, by a committee, or by both, and moves accordingly.

Two calendars running side by side

The official platform of the UAE government lists this day as the Gregorian New Year, and the qualifier is doing real work. The country keeps the Gregorian calendar for civil and commercial life and the Hijri calendar for religious observance and much official documentation; federal gazettes, court papers and government correspondence routinely carry both dates on the same page. Say "new year" without a qualifier in Dubai and the person you are speaking to may reasonably think of 1 Muharram, which is a separate public holiday several months away and never lands on the same date twice.

The day off does not move

Under Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024, a public holiday that coincides with the weekend is not replaced. There is no mechanism anywhere in UAE practice for shifting a lost holiday to the following Monday, so a 1 January that lands on a Saturday is simply a Saturday and the year opens with no day off at all. The Cabinet does hold a separate power to move a holiday other than the two Eids to the beginning or end of the working week, but it has been used for the lunar dates rather than the fixed ones, and 1 January has stayed where it is.

How the day is spent

The celebration belongs to the night before. Fireworks and drone displays run at the Burj Khalifa, along Palm Jumeirah and above the Abu Dhabi corniche, roads through the downtown areas close for several hours, and the metro runs through the night. Temperatures in the mid-twenties Celsius put the date at the height of the outdoor season, with hotels near capacity and beaches busy from the morning. Shopping centres, restaurants and attractions keep holiday hours; government service centres, schools and banks are shut.

For working-day arithmetic the effect is contained: a single date leaves the count, with nothing carried forward and nothing added back. That makes it the simplest holiday of the UAE year to handle, and a useful contrast with the multi-day blocks that arrive later, where four consecutive non-working days can turn a one-week task into a two-week one.
