How to use the online alarm clock

Half an hour is the interval the evening runs on downtown: the fountain shows at the foot of the Burj Khalifa go on the half hour, so a thirty-minute countdown is often literally a countdown to the next one. It is also the length of the daily commitment the country's autumn fitness challenge asks for — thirty minutes a day for thirty days.

Domestically it covers a roast chicken's final stretch, a load of washing on a short cycle, and the standard slot for a class, a lesson or a consultation. In an office it is the default meeting length, which is why so many calendars here are a wall of half-hour blocks.

The preset sets the alarm thirty minutes ahead of the current time and starts counting straight away, with no arithmetic and nothing to configure.

Why thirty minutes rather than twenty-five?

It matches the default meeting length, the standard class slot, and the interval the downtown fountain shows run on.
