How many days until the birthday?

The date is saved in your browser — the countdown carries on where it left off when you come back.

A birthday countdown is the one page in this section that is entirely yours: enter your date and the counter runs to the next occurrence of it, in days, hours, minutes and seconds. Nothing is stored on a server — the date stays in your own browser on your own device.

In the Emirates the arithmetic of a birthday is slightly more visible than elsewhere, because so many residents carry two calendars. The Gregorian date on the Emirates ID and the passport is the official one, while a Hijri birth date, where it exists, moves against it by about eleven days a year, so the two coincide only rarely across a lifetime.

The season decides the shape of the celebration more than the age does. A birthday between November and March is a garden party, a beach afternoon or a desert trip; one between June and September belongs indoors, in a soft-play centre or a chilled hotel ballroom, and frequently happens at a distance because so many families are out of the country for the summer. Anyone with a July birthday and school-age children learns to mark it either early or late.

The countdown rolls over automatically once the date has passed, so the page stays pointed at the next one rather than expiring.

Common questions

Is my birth date stored anywhere?

No. It stays in your own browser on your own device and is never transmitted to a server.

Why do the Gregorian and Hijri birthdays drift apart?

Because a lunar year is about eleven days shorter than a Gregorian one, so the two dates move against each other and coincide only rarely across a lifetime.
