Friday in the United Arab Emirates is a working day and a short one at the same time, which makes it unlike a Friday anywhere in Europe. Federal government offices finish at midday, many schools release pupils around noon, and a great many private employers have adopted some version of the same arrangement.

The reason is the congregational prayer, which falls in the early afternoon and is the largest regular gathering of the week. Traffic around the major mosques is dense for about an hour either side of it, and the roads are noticeably empty for the half hour while it is under way — one of the few moments in the week when a main road in Dubai is genuinely clear.

Since the working week changed in 2022, Friday has also acquired a second character as the start of the leisure weekend rather than part of it. The long brunch that used to define a Friday moved to Saturday along with the weekend, and Friday afternoon has become the country's usable half-day: appointments, errands, and the drive out of the city before the Saturday traffic.

Sharjah is the exception worth knowing about, having moved to a shorter working week of its own, so a Friday there and a Friday in Dubai are not the same day at all.

Common questions

Is Friday a working day in the UAE?

Yes, but a short one. Federal offices finish at midday and many schools release pupils around noon, leaving the afternoon clear for the congregational prayer.

Did the Friday brunch move?

Yes. When the weekend shifted to Saturday and Sunday in 2022, the long weekend brunch moved with it and is now a Saturday institution.

Is Sharjah the same?

No. Sharjah adopted a shorter working week of its own, so a Friday there and a Friday in Dubai are not the same working day.
