How many days until Halloween?

Halloween falls on 31 October, and in the Emirates the date carries no official standing whatsoever — it is not a holiday, and nothing about the working week changes for it. What it has instead is a large and enthusiastic commercial following, driven by international schools, residential communities and the hospitality industry.

The timing is what makes it work here. The end of October is the week the year turns: the humidity that makes September unbearable finally breaks, evening temperatures drop into the twenties, and outdoor life restarts across the country after four months indoors. A costume party on a lawn is possible on 31 October in a way it simply is not on 31 August, which is part of why the date has taken hold so firmly among expatriate families.

Communities organise trick-or-treating along particular streets on an agreed evening, which is not always the 31st itself — in a country where the working week runs Monday to Friday, a weekend evening close to the date often wins. Shopping centres and restaurants run themed events across the whole final week of the month rather than on the single day.

The countdown runs to midnight at the start of 31 October and resets to the following year once it has passed.
