The Ministry of Education publishes the calendar several years ahead, and the first day for pupils lands in the last days of the month — with private schools following British and American curricula typically starting a week or two earlier than the public system.

That makes the return an August event in every practical sense. Uniform and stationery shopping runs through the second half of the month, school transport routes are confirmed and bus times issued, and the families who left the country in June come back in a single concentrated week that is visible in the airport arrivals and in the traffic on the main roads the following Monday morning.

The heat is the complication no northern school year has to handle. Late August is still the hot and humid part of the year, so the first weeks run with outdoor activity restricted, air-conditioned buses collecting from before six in the morning, and break times managed around the temperature rather than the timetable. Relief does not arrive until well into October.
