How many hours between two times?

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculation runs past midnight (into the next day).

Hours and duration — other calculators

This works out how much time separates two clock times — the length of a shift, a journey, a booking, a night's sleep. The answer comes as hours and minutes and also as a decimal, which is the form timesheets and invoices usually want.

Times crossing midnight are handled properly rather than returning a negative: a shift from 10:00 pm to 6:30 am is eight and a half hours, the finish being taken as the next occurrence of that time after the start. The calculator also disambiguates the two awkward points of the 12-hour clock, where 12:00 am is the start of the day and 12:00 pm the middle of it.

The UAE simplifies this more than most countries do. Gulf Standard Time is UTC+4 the whole year round and daylight saving has never been operated here, so every day is exactly 24 hours long and no shift is ever secretly 23 or 25 hours. The local complications are of a different kind: the shortened Friday, with the break around midday, and the two-hour reduction of the working day during Ramadan set out in the labour law. Neither changes the arithmetic — both change what the answer should be compared against.
