This counts backwards instead: how many days have passed since a date already gone. The answer comes as a total in days, and also expressed in weeks, and in years, months and days.
The questions it answers tend to be personal or administrative. How long since you landed in the country, since a contract or a probation period started, since a visa was issued, since a milestone worth measuring. For long spans the day total is the figure that stays comparable, since the years-months-days form depends on which months happened to fall inside the period and can differ by a day or two for spans of identical length.
Two properties keep the arithmetic clean here. The comparison is of whole dates rather than elapsed hours, so nothing depends on the time of day at either end. And the UAE stays on one clock offset all year, so no hour is ever added to or removed from a span — a sum run over the same dates in Europe or North America crosses two clock changes a year and can disagree by an hour at the boundaries.
