Running timer

How to use the online timer

Half an hour is a run rather than a training session, which is the most common kind anybody does. Here it is also a run with a season attached: from May to September it belongs to the hour before sunrise or well after dark, and from November to March it belongs to whenever you like. That seasonal flip catches out most people in their first year.

Start the count when you start moving rather than when you leave the flat, and let it run in the background while a music app or nothing at all takes the foreground. If it is on a phone, keep the screen from locking, because a suspended tab is not counting. On a treadmill in a building gym, the machine's own display and this one will disagree slightly, and it does not matter.

Thirty minutes at a conversational pace does more over a month than twenty minutes run hard and skipped twice. Heat changes pace considerably even in the evening, and a run that feels the same effort in August will be slower than the same run in January — which is a fact about the air, not about you. Water before and after matters more here than almost anywhere else.

Common questions

When should I run in summer?

Before sunrise or well after dark, or indoors on a treadmill. From November to March that constraint disappears and almost any time of day works, which is a bigger seasonal swing than most newcomers expect.

Will the count keep running on my phone?

Only if the screen stays awake and the browser stays in front. Phones suspend background tabs, so for a run it is worth keeping the page visible or using a separate device.
