How to use the online timer

What these pages have in common is a fixed length and nothing to achieve inside it. Ten minutes sitting still, five minutes of slow breathing, fifteen minutes of paying attention without trying to fix anything, twenty minutes lying down at the end of the day: the value is in doing it regularly rather than in doing it for a long time.

A countdown is more useful here than in almost any other setting, because the alternative is opening an eye every two minutes to see how much is left. Once the ending is somebody else's problem, the session can be what it is meant to be. These pages cover sitting practice, breathing patterns, mindfulness, deliberate rest, a yoga session at home, and a sauna, which belongs here as much as anywhere.

None of it requires equipment, a subscription or a particular belief about what it does. Attention wandering is normal and noticing it is the practice rather than a failure of it. If something consistently leaves you worse than before, that is worth taking at face value rather than persisting with, and anything involving heat or cold has its own cautions attached.
