What Is the Weekend in the UAE Working Week?

The usual weekend in the UAE is Saturday and Sunday. The change took effect in January 2022, replacing the previous Friday-and-Saturday weekend used by government bodies and much of the country. Most office-based private employers now follow a Monday-to-Friday pattern too, although working days can vary in retail, hospitality, healthcare, construction and other seven-day services. If you are arranging a call with colleagues in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, Monday through Thursday normally provides the widest shared working window.

Why the UAE weekend changed in 2022

Before 2022, Friday and Saturday formed the familiar UAE weekend. That arrangement recognised Friday’s religious significance while giving residents two consecutive days away from many offices and schools. The 2022 timetable moved the main weekend to Saturday and Sunday, bringing the UAE working week closer to the pattern followed across much of Europe and in many international companies. Friday did not simply become an ordinary full weekday: the new structure retained a distinct place for Friday prayers and introduced a shorter Friday for the federal public sector.

The change can still cause confusion when someone remembers an earlier visit, employment contract or school calendar. A document written before January 2022 may treat Sunday as the first office day and Thursday as the final one. That is no longer the standard pattern for federal offices or most corporate workplaces. Current planning should normally treat Monday as the opening business day, Friday as a working day that may finish early, and Saturday and Sunday as the weekend. The site calendar may display Sunday at the start of each row, but that visual convention does not make Sunday a working day.

Friday is part of the week, but it remains different

Friday carries a rhythm of its own in the UAE. Jumu’ah, the congregational Friday prayer, takes place around midday, so meetings near noon can clash with prayer, travel and lunch arrangements. Federal government employees work four and a half days, with a shorter session on Friday. Many schools also use a four-and-a-half-day timetable, ending Friday classes around midday rather than following a normal afternoon schedule. Exact hours depend on the authority, emirate, school and workplace, so a shared calendar is more reliable than assuming every organisation closes at the same time.

Private-sector arrangements are more varied. A corporate office may finish early on Friday, remain open for its normal hours or allow teams to set schedules around operational needs. Shopping centres, hotels, airports, restaurants and hospitals continue serving people across the weekend, usually through rotating shifts. This means that “the UAE weekend” describes the national office and school pattern, not a rule that every employee must be away from work on both days. When contacting a particular person, their stated working hours matter more than the opening times of their industry.

Planning messages between the UAE and Europe

The Saturday-and-Sunday weekend creates a broad Monday-to-Friday overlap with European colleagues. The remaining complication is the clock. The UAE stays on Gulf Standard Time throughout the year and does not change its clocks, while several European countries move between standard time and summer time. A recurring call therefore shifts by one hour from the European participant’s perspective when their local clock changes, even though the Dubai time remains fixed. Confirm both time zones in the invitation instead of writing only “morning” or “after lunch”.

Friday needs extra care. A European team may see Friday afternoon as a convenient final slot before the weekend, while an Emirati public-sector contact or a parent collecting children may already have finished for the day. Monday to Thursday, particularly the UAE morning and early afternoon, usually gives both sides more room. For non-urgent messages sent late on Friday, expect the recipient to return on Monday. An email scheduled on Sunday may reach European and UAE inboxes during the shared weekend, even though Sunday once served as a regular UAE working day.

Working with colleagues in India and Saudi Arabia

India generally offers substantial weekday overlap with the UAE, with India one hour and thirty minutes ahead of Gulf Standard Time. A meeting at 10:00 am in Dubai is therefore 11:30 am in India. Monday through Thursday is straightforward for many office teams in both countries. Friday can still work, but the UAE’s shorter public-sector and school timetable makes an early slot more practical than a meeting near midday or late afternoon. Sunday is usually outside the UAE office week, even if an individual Indian team happens to work that day.

Saudi Arabia requires a different mental calendar because its usual weekend remains Friday and Saturday. Sunday is therefore a Saudi working day but a UAE weekend day, while Friday sits inside the UAE working week but starts the Saudi weekend. The four-day overlap is Monday through Thursday. Those are the clearest days for joint reviews, approvals and discussions that need people in both countries. A message sent from Dubai on Friday may wait until Sunday in Riyadh, by which point the Dubai recipient may be away until Monday.

A practical weekly pattern

For regional work, keep substantial meetings and time-sensitive requests between Monday and Thursday whenever possible. Use Friday morning for UAE-only tasks, brief conversations and work that can pause before the weekend. Treat Saturday and Sunday as non-working days for typical UAE offices, but check shift schedules for operational teams. During Ramadan, working hours and daily routines may change further, with earlier starts, shorter working periods or reduced afternoon availability in some workplaces. Calendar invitations should show Gulf Standard Time, use clear h12 times such as 9:30 am, and account for both the recipient’s weekend and any shortened Friday schedule.
