Counting Days Around Sharjah Government’s Three-Day Weekend

Sharjah’s government sector adopted a four-day working week in 2022, with Friday, Saturday and Sunday as its weekly rest days. For a date count using that schedule, Monday to Thursday are the potential working days. This makes Friday the crucial difference when comparing the Sharjah government pattern with the UAE federal pattern. A calendar can show the same start date, end date and public holidays for both, yet produce different working-day totals because one schedule includes Friday and the other excludes it.

The distinction belongs to the organisation whose schedule you are counting. An address in Sharjah alone does not establish a Friday-to-Sunday weekend: the government-sector arrangement should not automatically be applied to every employer, school or office in the emirate. The federal working-day pattern runs from Monday to Friday, with Saturday and Sunday excluded. Before using any total, identify whether the relevant schedule is Sharjah government, federal government or another organisation’s own timetable. That choice determines which dates can enter the calculation in the first place.

Calendar days and working days answer different questions

A calendar-day count includes every date in the chosen range, regardless of weekends. A working-day count filters that range according to the relevant weekly schedule and applicable holidays. Consider an ordinary Monday-to-Sunday week with no public holiday, including both the Monday and Sunday in the range. It contains seven calendar dates, four Sharjah government working dates and five federal working dates. The three-day weekend changes the number of dates available for work; it does not shorten the calendar week or remove Friday from elapsed time.

The same distinction becomes clearer over several complete weeks. Four consecutive Monday-to-Sunday weeks contain 28 calendar dates. Before holidays, the Sharjah government pattern contributes 16 working days, while the federal pattern contributes 20. These figures work because the range contains four complete repetitions of the weekly schedule. For a range beginning or ending partway through a week, count the remaining dates individually. Dividing a calendar-day total by seven and multiplying by four can produce a fraction or an inaccurate result when the range includes incomplete weeks.

Set the boundaries before counting

Whether the start and end dates are included is a separate decision from which days form the weekend. Take a Thursday-to-Monday range without a public holiday. Including both endpoints gives five calendar dates: Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Under the Sharjah government pattern, only Thursday and Monday count as working days, giving two. If the instruction is to count working days after Thursday, Thursday is excluded and Monday becomes the first qualifying date. Neither result is contradictory; the two calculations use different starting boundaries.

Adding a stated number of working days also requires an explicit starting convention. Suppose a hypothetical schedule asks for three working days after a Thursday, with the starting Thursday excluded and no intervening holidays. Friday, Saturday and Sunday are skipped; Monday is day one, Tuesday day two and Wednesday day three. Including the starting Thursday instead would make it day one and place day three on Tuesday. Write down the convention alongside the result, especially when sharing a date with someone who may otherwise assume that counting begins immediately.

Apply holidays without subtracting the same date twice

Once the weekly pattern is established, remove applicable public holidays that fall on otherwise eligible working dates. A date excluded as a weekend day cannot also reduce the working-day total as a holiday. In a hypothetical Monday-to-Sunday week, a holiday on Wednesday reduces the Sharjah government total from four to three. A holiday on Friday leaves the total at four because Friday was already excluded. This is a rule of counting distinct dates: each date either qualifies or does not, even when more than one reason makes it non-working.

The location of a holiday within the week therefore matters as much as the length of its named break. Imagine a hypothetical holiday block covering Thursday and Friday. Under the Sharjah government pattern, only Thursday removes an additional working date, so that week has three working days. Under the federal pattern, both Thursday and Friday would otherwise qualify, leaving three there too. For actual holiday ranges, use the applicable declared days off. A provisional religious-calendar date or the name of a festival alone is insufficient to identify every date that should be excluded.

Compare schedules one Friday at a time

If a calculation already uses the federal Monday-to-Friday pattern, adapting it to the Sharjah government week means removing the Fridays that remain in its working-day total. Do not subtract every Friday in the range indiscriminately: a Friday already excluded as a public holiday needs no further adjustment. For example, a holiday-free range from Wednesday through the following Tuesday, with both endpoints included, has five federal working days: Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday. Removing Friday leaves four for the Sharjah government schedule. Saturday and Sunday are already excluded in both versions.

Keep working-day totals separate from working hours. The federal pattern includes a shortened Friday, but a date-based count still treats that Friday as a working date unless another exclusion applies. The Sharjah government pattern excludes it completely as a weekly rest day. Neither figure, by itself, tells you the number of hours available or the time at which a particular office accepts an appointment. A clear date-count note should record the range, whether each endpoint is included, the weekly rest days and the holiday dates removed. Those details make the result understandable when two organisations follow different schedules.
