How to use the online alarm clock

Midday carries the most structure of any hour here. The noon prayer falls in the first part of it, and on a Friday the congregational prayer and sermon follow, which is why federal working hours end at twelve on that day and why so much of the Friday afternoon is left deliberately clear.

It is also a legal boundary in summer. Under the midday break rule, work under direct sun in open sites stops from 12:30 pm until 3 pm for a defined stretch of the hottest months, and site schedules are built around that pause rather than around it being optional. An alarm at 12:25 pm on a site is doing something no calendar reminder does.

The notation trap belongs here too: noon is written 12:00 pm and midnight 12:00 am, which is the opposite of what most people guess. A deadline given as twelve o'clock without further qualification has caused more missed submissions than any other time of day, and naming the minute outright — as these sixty pages do — ends the argument.
