How to use the online alarm clock

Midnight is where one date stops being true and the next one begins, and a great deal of official life in the Emirates is pinned to precisely that instant. Online government applications close on the stroke, renewal windows expire at it, and ticket ballots for the winter events calendar open on it. Nothing about the moment is negotiable, which is exactly why people set an alarm for the minute before rather than the hour itself.

It is also the last hour of the transport day for most of the country. The metro is finishing its final runs on an ordinary weeknight, the taxi ranks outside the malls are at their busiest, and the roads that were solid at six in the evening are moving freely again.

One point of notation causes more missed deadlines than any other: twelve o'clock at night is written 12:00 am, and it belongs to the day that is starting, not the one that is ending. Every minute page in this hour, from 12:00 am to 12:59 am, is labelled on that basis, so a deadline described as midnight has only one possible reading here.
