How to use the online alarm clock

Eleven at night is when European football starts. A nine o'clock kick-off in central Europe lands at eleven here, and the later fixtures run past midnight, which is why so many alarms in this hour are set by people who intend to watch one match and not the rest of the night.

It is the last hour of the metro on an ordinary weeknight, and the point at which a journey home that took twenty minutes by train starts taking a taxi's fare and a taxi's queue. An alarm set here is often about catching the last train rather than anything else.

On 31 December the whole country watches this hour count itself out, with the fireworks at the Burj Khalifa and along the coast timed to the second on a night when the roads close early and getting into position is a matter of hours rather than minutes. Sixty individual pages cover 11:00 pm to 11:59 pm, each a straightforward browser alarm that sounds as long as the tab is open and the device is awake.
